Video of Cabins in El Calafate

El Calafate was founded as a locality by a National Decree on December 7th in 1927. This is the way the present-day tourist village was born, directly related to cattle raising activity in its beginnings.

It is a picturesque place, located at the bottom of the homonym mountain and by the side of Lake Argentino, 185 m. above sea level. El Calafate is 315 km. far from Río Gallegos, capital of Santa Cruz province. This puissant city of almost 17.000 inhabitants still conserves some of the picturesque features of its architecture, for example, the houses with span roof and neighborhoods of similar buildings.
The colorful green of its vegetation makes this place beautiful. The vegetation is composed of flowers of different kinds, among which the rose bushes are remarkable; in addition to the quantity of trees and pines that adorn the downtown of this Tourist Village.

The supportive and communicative sense of its people is something outstanding, signs of crucial importance for tourists. You access the place going along National Route Nº 3, Provincial Route Nº 5, National Route Nº 40 and finally, Provincial Route Nº 11 (they are all paved).
The importance of the new International Airport, inaugurated on November 17th in 2000, and located 22 km. far from downtown, is something to be underlined. It is open during all the year with frequencies to Buenos Aires, Puerto Madryn, Ushuaia, Bariloche, Comodoro Rivadavia and some localities in our province.

The name El Calafate refers to a small bushy wood called calafate that used to grow on the plain and near the ford there was a bigger one that soon distinguished the place with its generic name: Mata Grande or simply El Calafate, name that was then spontaneously assigned to the place.
