Puerto Montt is the capital of the Xa Region, situated opposite the  Seno de Reloncavi It has a bay protected by  Tenglo Island.

It was founded on 12 February 1853 by Vicente Perez Rosales  in the town called Astilleros de Melipulli . Its name was given because of the boss Manuel Montt. The first setters´ main activity was the cultivation of-larch.

The original settlement was situated by the Seno de Reloncavi, since that moment covered by a thick jungle called Melipulli (four hills).
The first German villagers arrived in 1852 starting in this way the complete settlement. Puerto Montt started to grow since 1912 after the construction of the railway which connected it with the rest of the continent.

It has now 175000 inhabitants. Due to its position this city is the first step to other places and a very important tourist attraction and also a harbour for the southern regions. It has  got the international airpot El Tepual.
